Gary Null’s book is thoughtful, reflective and even contemplative. Out of all that comes his piercing understanding of so many aspects of human nature. And his nature demands that he share this with us for our own self-improvement and betterment.
I’ve known and worked with Gary for over 35 years, in workshops, retreats, participating in many of his award-winning documentaries and over the years, I see a man who walks his talk. He’s the real thing. That is exemplified in his writing in general, and poignantly, in this book in particular, calling us to our higher potential.
The highest vision and purpose of this book, and honestly, of Gary’s life-work, is to signal a wake-up call to us all, to be the man or woman we are wholly capable of being.

Gary Null stands at the pinacol of the great thinkers of our time. His many contributions in all forms, and most especially in his writings, bring such impact to our society that it is difficult to quantitate. This book again delivers the quantum shift desired by the segment of those wanting to understand who we are in this very challenging reality. His points always well-made and the way he structures his content allows us to follow him into the answers of the questions that perplex all of us. His books are not just to be read but studied and read over and over. I sleep next to him every night - his books on my nightstand, of course.
Gary Null’s Be Your Own Best Friend breaks down the seemingly insurmountable task of harmonizing one’s life into manageable objectives, using illustrative anecdotes, insightful observations on modern American society, and introspective writing prompts to motivate the reader to reexamine their assumptions about themselves and the world and shed the conditioning that is holding them back from realizing their potential. Deceptively simple prescriptions such as “Prepare yourself for opportunity” and “Speak locally before speaking loudly” offer clues to discovering one’s true purpose, leaving the reader with an understanding that this is not something to be obtained but to be uncovered within an individual. As a millennial conditioned to embrace alienation as a survival strategy and avoid introspection at all costs, I saved several quotes to refer to in the future to halt dysfunctional behavior patterns when I notice them emerging.
I charged through this fascinating book while hitting my own moment of reckoning about the unsustainable toll of my current pursuits. "Becoming your own best friend" is a deeply compassionate self-help book — both beautiful and seriously helpful.
The title alone felt like a luxury I couldn't quite claim yet. The concept is essential, especially as I age and face greater challenges. The subtitle, “From self-sabotage to self-empowerment in 60 days,” delivered on its promise — accessible, practical and even a manageable time-frame.
Gary Null opens with an understanding explanation of why people end up at the bottom of their own list — and how limited self-vision drives poor decisions. He immediately counters that trend with up-to-the-moment brain science on neuroplasticity and our very real capacity to change, and to enjoy our own responsibility fully.
From there the book broadens into a wide-ranging look at the world that breeds this crippling mindset. There’s grit, as Gary Null traces the origins of our limitations through today's events and power structures. It maps the web of connections — macro and micro — then brings it all back to real, workable steps.
The practical guidance feels tested and lived-in, drawn from years of counseling and hundreds of “health retreats” that Gary Null sponsors. This is advice from someone who's been there and worked with many, many people on their successful journeys to health.
If you're going through something, or just feel like you've been running in place, this book offers a tested, step-by-step path to genuinely possessing your own life, health and happiness. It is worth taking some time out from the merry-go-round to enjoy this unique and different approach. It will change your experience of the quality of your moment-to-moment self-talk, help you to regain balance, and guide you to “becoming your own best friend.”
And the beautiful cover — warm and serious all at once. Just like the book.
I actually felt love from this book.
Right from the beginning, I felt wrapped in the love this book offers — a gentle, kind invitation to truly get to know myself. I was so moved by how generously Gary credits everyone who contributed to this work and to his other writings. That humility and gratitude says so much about who he is.
Gary, you have been my favorite person to listen to and learn from for a long time now. The way you teach feels so honest, caring, and real. This book is pure Gary — it’s all about teaching us how to live a good, beautiful life.
I can’t possibly explain everything that’s in these pages because it runs so deep. It carries a profound love for humanity and for each individual soul. It’s filled with love for all life and a deep honoring of life itself.
This book is about truth, love, power, and breaking free from illusion. It gently helps us see ourselves clearly and finally be ourselves — free from the disharmony and lies we’ve been taught by schools, religions, and political authorities.
Gary also shares the history lessons we all desperately need — honest stories about how humanity has treated one another and where we find ourselves now. He reminds us that we can never be truly healthy or loving if we build our lives on lies and misinformation.
Most of all, he gives us a loving path forward: how to behave with kindness, how to serve our fellow human beings, and how to show up for life with an open heart.
There are so many beautiful things in this book. It asks you to read slowly and look deeper. At its core, it’s about the love we are meant to offer ourselves first, and then share with others. When we become self-aware and learn to truly love ourselves, we can finally give real love and service to everyone around us.
This book needs to be in classrooms everywhere — read, discussed, and then brought to life through action. It’s an invitation to stop just talking about love and truth, and start living them every single day.
Gary, thank you for pouring your heart into this. It means more than I can say.
“Becoming Your Own Best Friend, from Self Sabotage to Self-Empowerment in 60 Days”, by Gary Null, Ph.D., is more than a self-help book. This book examines the individual and society and puts our behaviors under the microscope motivating the reader to action by offering simple steps towards positive growth. The author’s transformative words are bound between the a stunning cover portraying a beautiful pool vista surrounded by lavender fields and blue skies.
As the title implies , one can take the journey towards self-empowerment at anytime. Gary states, in the acknowledgment , “that the real purpose of this work is to encourage people to think independently, to seek knowledge for themselves and to recognize their own capacity for growth and change. “.
Personally, the chapter entitled, ‘Reclaiming Your Authentic Self’, motivated me to try step one and ask myself: “Am I choosing from fear or love?”.
This simple question caused a huge stir in my heart. I sadly realized that so many of my life’s choices were chosen from fear, thus making my heart , my health and my future very limited and consequently constriction ensued.
In life, I have learned that one’s Faith in God and one’s perception is much more important than we realize. This woman is now choosing love , each day and suddenly my world is expanding. I highly recommend this excellent book! We all need to become our own best friend and thank you Gary Null for being our true friend to point it out and guide us to a better understanding.
